Camping

Private Campgrounds: There are privately owned and operated campgrounds operating on West Manitoulin offering a range of amenities such as RV hookups, tent and trailer sites, cabins, washroom/shower facilities and sometimes recreational activities. Refer to our Business listing under Accommodations for further information. 

Before planning a camping trip to the area, it’s advisable to check the availability, amenities and specific regulations of the chosen camping location. Whatever you choose, it will be a great experience for nature lovers.

Golfing

The north end of the course is characterized by rolling terrain that was formerly grazing fields for farmer’s cattle and lends a links-style feel to the holes. The parkland- style south side of the course is surrounded by hardwood forest. Adjacent to the clubhouse you will find a putting green and practice net perfect for warming up before beginning your round. A full-service restaurant offers dining in the air- conditioned clubhouse, or out on the large patio surrounded by colourful gardens looking out at the 9th green.  https://manitoulingolf.com/

Manitoulin Golf is a 9-hole course located in a pastoral setting 5 minutes south of Gore Bay. Opened in 1980, the course has had 40 years to mature into the challenging layout it is today. Rated at 69.6 from the red tees, the par 36 course offers multiple sets of tees at each hole, and alternate tee decks on #2 and #8. You can play 18 holes and enjoy a completely different looking back 9.  With two par 3’s, five par 4’s, and two par 5’s you’ll use every club in your bag.

Curling

The Gore Bay Curling Club, located on the outskirts of Gore Bay is a hub for curling enthusiasts. The club offers a welcoming environment for both experienced curlers and beginners. With its well-maintained ice sheets and facilities, the Gore Bay Curling Club provides opportunities for people to participate in leagues, bonspiels, and learn-to-curl programs for both junior and adult curlers. 

 

It is also home to the renowned annual “Curffle Bonspiel”, held at the end of March each year to close out the curling season, which draws teams from all over Manitoulin & the North Shore. Think of shuffleboard rules applied to curling. Fun to play and watch. The Curling Club serves as a social centre where members and visitors can enjoy the sport of curling or just watching others compete, while fostering a sense of community within West Manitoulin.


Water Sports

Manitoulin Island, located in Lake Huron, offers various water sports activities such as kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, fishing, sailing, power boating, and swimming. Visitors can explore West Manitoulin’s scenic coastline, inland lakes and streams. Lake Huron, specifically, the North Channel is a boaters paradise. See more information under the Boating Category. The inland lakes are perfect for canoeing, paddleboarding, and fishing. Inland lakes with boat launch access include Lake Kagawong, Ice Lake, Lake Wolsey, Silver Lake, Falls Lake, Loon Lake, Lily Lake. So, bring your boats, paddleboards, kayaks and canoes and start exploring. You don’t want to miss out on the adventures that await you.

Boating on West Manitoulin is a popular activity during the warmer months. West Manitoulin’s extensive coastline, inland lakes, and proximity to Lake Huron and the North Channel offer excellent opportunities for various boating experiences. 


Sailing: The surrounding waters of Western Manitoulin are ideal for sailing enthusiasts. The North Channel is famous among sailors for its scenic beauty and ideal sailing conditions. It’s considered one of the top sailing destinations globally due to its sheltered waters and numerous anchorages. The area boasts stunning landscapes, including rocky shores, picturesque islands, crystal-clear waters, and beautiful sunsets, making it an attractive destination for boaters, kayakers, and nature enthusiasts.


Motorboating: Explore the North Channel and inland lakes through motorboating. Many areas offer boat launches, allowing individuals and families to cruise along the shorelines, explore the North Channel or venture out for a fishing excursion. Kayaking and Canoeing: The Island’s inland lakes and calm bays are perfect for kayaking and canoeing. Paddle along the peaceful waters and explore secluded coves and natural surroundings.

Marinas

West Manitoulin boasts some of the top marinas in the NorthChannel.

Kagawong Marina

Kagawong marina facilities include the Aus Hunt Marina (formerly the “government dock”) and the Small Craft Basin, adjacent to the Old Mill building. The marina phone number is (705) 282-8800 from mid-May to September. For information in the off season please call Tiana Mills Monday to Friday at the municipal office 705-282-2611, ext. 225 (the office closes at noon on Fridays). The Marina is open from Monday – Saturday 8am – 8pm and Sunday from 8am – 5pm during the summer months. Amenities include docking facilities, fuel services, pump out services and electricity hookups. Gore Bay Marina: 

Situated in the heart of Gore Bay, the well protected marina offers convenient access to the North Channel of Lake Huron, making it an ideal spot for boaters exploring the area. Amenities include deep calm waters, wide docks with docking facilities for boats up to 100 ft, fuel services, pump out services, and electricity hook ups. Shower Houses and Laundromat services are included as well. It accommodates both seasonal and transient boaters. Meldrum Bay Marina:
The Meldrum Bay Marina is well equipped 
to service seasonal as well as transient boaters. Our deep-water access permits the full use of our modern docks, most of which provide electricity. Gas and diesel are also conveniently available.

Fishing Great Lakes

Fishing

There are fantastic fishing opportunities in its inland lakes and north channel, attracting anglers interested in catching a variety of fish species including pike, bass, perch, pickerel, herring, whitefish, rainbow trout, and salmon. Indigenous Culture & Heritage

Visitors can engage in Indigenous cultural experiences, learning about the Anishnaabe people’s traditions, art, and history. This includes visiting museums, attending powwows, and experiencing cultural events. The Sheshegwaning Powwow is an annual event not to be missed.

Farm Visits and Local Produce

Visitors and locals can explore some of our local farms offering farm to table produce and meats. The various Farmers’ Markets are very popular and offer a variety of farm fresh products and local artisan works. These markets take place as follows:

What exactly are alvars? These distinctive landscapes are naturally open habitats featuring a thin layer of soil or no soil at all, resting upon a base of limestone or dolostone. It's this unique combination of geological and physical attributes that creates the perfect environment for natural communities found nowhere else.

Where can you find alvars? While alvars exist globally, they're primarily concentrated on islands off the coast of Sweden, the eastern European Baltic region, and in the United Kingdom and Ireland. However, in North America, nearly 75 percent of these remarkable habitats are situated right here in Ontario. Misery Bay and Burnt Island are both stunning examples. Birdwatching

The island is home to diverse bird species, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching. Bird enthusiasts can explore West Manitoulin’s many parks, wetlands, shores, boardwalks to observe various species. Gore Bay’s boardwalk on the south end is a great place to view many species of birds.

Winter Activities

Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing

Manitoulin Golf hosts a groomed trail for Cross Country Skiing Enthusiasts. Located in Gordon Township, just out side of Gore bay, pack up your skiis and make your way to this great trail system. A peaceful way to explore the winter wonderland while getting some exercise.

Winter Festivals & Events

West Manitoulin hosts various winter festivals and events, such as holiday markets, winter carnivals, Santa Claus Parades, and more, offering entertainment and community engagement during the colder months. Always check out our Community Calendar for details.

Skating

Outdoor Rinks: Kagawong is home to a new covered outdoor rink located next to the Kagawong Park Centre. It is a fantastic facility that provides a picturesque setting for recreational skating and hockey.

Natural Ice Surfaces: When weather conditions permit, some frozen lakes or ponds on West Manitoulin offer a natural setting for outdoor skating. However, caution should always be exercised when skating on natural ice surfaces, ensuring they are safe and properly frozen.

Indoor Arena: The Gore Bay Memorial Arena, located on Phipps Street, offers public skating, figure skating programs, private ice rentals and rooms for private parties and opportunities for hockey practices and games.

Snowmobiling

All of Manitoulin Island has a network of snowmobile trails, providing opportunities for thrilling rides through scenic landscapes during the winter months. This is especially true on West Manitoulin. The trails travel through forests, along breathtaking shores of lakes and streams where siting wildlife in its natural habitat is assured. Ice Fishing

Many of the area’s inland lakes and bays freeze during the winter, providing excellent opportunities for ice fishing. Anglers can try their luck catching fish like perch, herring, pike, and trout. Always check the ice conditions prior to venturing onto frozen waters. Safety first.

Hockey

Hockey holds a significant place in the recreational and community activities on West Manitoulin. The Gore Bay Memorial Arena serves the communities and first nation of West Manitoulin. It hosts hockey leagues, tournaments, and events. Local leagues cater to various age groups, allowing both young and adults to participate in organized hockey. These leagues provide opportunities for players to develop their skills, compete, and enjoy the sport in a community oriented atmosphere.
